Plate umpire Jeff Kellogg wraps up the fan who ran onto the field.

For the fourth time this early season, a fan ran onto the Camden Yards field, this time in the middle of the seventh. As the Baltimore City Police began their required collapsing seal of the diamond, the bare-chested man ran down the third base line and slid headfirst into home plate.

Just as quickly as the guy stood up, he went right back down, thanks to a blindside hit delivered by plate umpire Jeff Kellogg, a tackle worthy of the night’s NFL draft. Kellogg’s snap, crack and pop — which surely will be met with discipline by Major League Baseball — was greeted with delight from the bundled-up, announced crowd of 18,297.

From now until the day he leaves the commisioner’s office, I never want to hear about how that greedy fuck cares about player safety or the quality of the product. He took the NBA brand and squeezed it like a sponge that was bone dry, hoping to drop every last penny he could into the pockets of the owners and the league. There have been many casualties due to his greed, but none more heartbreaking than the reigning MVP.

Prayers go out to Derrick Rose for a speedy recovery. Hopefully he returns next season, even better than before.

As for the NBA commissioner? He should step down at the end of the season. Good riddance, once & for all.

Celebrating his 48^th birthday today is former Indiana Pacers forward Reggie Miller. The 11^th overall pick in the 1987 draft, the UCLA alum averaged 18.2 points per game and made 2,560 three-pointers in his 18-year NBA career and will be inducted into the Hall of Fame this September.

Derrick Rose was doomed the moment the owners and the players' union signed that agreement. I've talked with multiple trainers who work with NBA players. They say very few -- if any -- athletes in the NBA put the pressure on their joints and move their bodies with the torque Rose does. These opinions weren't offered Saturday, in the wake of Rose tearing his ACL; they were offered in great detail weeks ago, when Rose was trying to come back from one injury, then the next, then the next. What's that old song: "The leg bone's connected to the hip bone ... ." Well, it is. Everything is connected, and when Rose hurt his toe, it affected his hip, which affected his knee. And he never had the time, in this compressed season, to condition himself the way he had previously -- the way he would have this season. The kid, before now, had played in 280 of 286 games since he left Simeon High School. If not Ripkenesque, it's still damn good at 98 percent participation. In other words, Rose didn't miss games -- until this winter.

For all those medical experts —both real & imagined— who have messaged, emailed, & reblogged my initial rant that Stern & the league are to blame for Rose & other player’s injuries this year, let’s let Mike Wilbon go on, shall we?

He’s not the only one. Dwight Howard, who had played more than 550 NBA games since high school, played in 98.7 percent. He missed seven games. If not Superman, it’s Ironman. Yet, Howard, after back surgery, is done for the season, just like Rose. Old guys such as Chauncey Billups (Achilles) are done for the season, as are young pups such as Ricky Rubio (knee) and Iman Shumpert, who like Rose crashed to the court Saturday without contact.

One after another, players would go down. Players of significance, we’re talking. Al Horford, Brook Lopez, Eric Gordon, more recently Ray Allen. Hamilton would say, “See, I told you. There’s nothing like this season.”

Again, my blaming the Commissioner for these injuries because of the way the season was structured is not stating some medical fact. It’s simply my opinion(plus Wilbon & others) that the lack of preseason, an average of one game every two days, & having some teams play their first playoff game with a little more than 48 hours of rest, led to a higher than normal occurrence of injuries. However, for those of you stating it’s just a random coincidence that injuries like Rose having his knee explode or that ACL injuries have nothing to do with the wear & tear this season caused, you should get a clue. I’d also suggest getting a refund for that medical degree, or, more likely, read more than a WebMD article before preaching that you definitively know the injury plagued NBA season of 2011-12 just happens to be because of bad luck. That’s not just my opinion, it’s a fact.

On Thursday prior to Round 1 of the NFL draft, team HHR and a handful of bloggers including our friends at KSK, SB Nation, The Jets Blog, Bleacher Report and The NFL Chick were given the opportunity to tour the League’s new headquarters and sit in their nerve center to hear from, among others, senior manager/assistant director of operations (and former chicken dancer) Merton Hanks and the Commissioner himself, Roger Goodell.

GMC, the official vehicle of the NFL, was gracious enough to invite us to take part in the intimate gathering. As black GM SUVs were shuttling players - past, present and future - to and from Radio City Music Hall, the invite was a smart, cost-effective and non-intrusive way to connect with a handful of online influencers that benefits the company, league and participants alike.

With last night’s victory over the Hornets, the Memphis Grizzlies have clinched a playoff spot in the Western Conference. As the fifth seed, the Grizzlies will most likely meet the Los Angeles Clippers in the first round.

It should be noted that the Grizzlies could catch and surpass the Clippers in the standings and earn home court advantage in the opening round. Three out of the four remaining games for the Grizzlies are against below .500 teams where are the Clippers’ remaining schedule are all above .500 teams and on the road.

Book Review: Enchantment by Guy Kawasaki

As I’ve mentioned before on this site, it’s imperative that you work on being an interesting and likeable person. With this book, Guy Kawasaki has laid out a roadmap for achieving that goal.

As Guy mentions in his book, many people consider this to be the How To Win Friends and Influence People of the modern age. The book is full of tips ranging from how to engage your zygomatic muscles which improve your smile, to methods for contructing emails to make them more impactful.

At first glance, this can seem to be a book for how to be more extroverted. But, believe it or not, Guy is actually an introvert. Whichever end of the spectrum you’re on, you will definitely benefit from reading this book.
